Fertilizing Questions and Answers

What is the most common cause of lawn decline?
Aeration is often the culprit and most homeowners overlook problems associated with soil compaction. Insects, disease, nematodes, improper watering and a lack of fertilizer are often looked at instead of compaction. Without proper aeration it’s possible to spend hundreds of extra dollars per year to maintain a lawn when aeration is a more affordable means of a solution.

Is aeration an expensive process?
No. A typical 10,000-square-foot lawn area when aerated and over seeded is under $575. Sure, anyone can rent a machine and buy gas, grass seed and fertilizer for just over $315. However, if you factor in your time, transportation and effort PLUS the possibility of damaging tree roots, underground utilities or sprinkler heads and lines... is it really worth it.

What will aeration do for my lawn and why is it important?
As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports, activities, pets, vehicle traffic and parking, soil compaction can result. Compaction greatly reduces the pore space within the soil that would normally hold air. Roots require oxygen to grow and absorb nutrients and water. Compaction has a negative impact on nutrient uptake and water filtration, in addition to being a physical barrier to root growth. Most turf grasses growing in heavy clay or poor soils also benefit greatly from annual aeration. Dr. Green's treatment will help improve the recycling flow of air, water, and fertilizer which rejuvenates your grass by allowing the grass roots to grow deeper – keeping your lawn healthier, thicker and greener.

Lawn Aeration

Benefits of Aeration

  • Improving rooting and most importantly encouraging new growth
  • Enhancing filtration of rainfall or irrigation, thus improving drainage
  • Helping prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas, thus increasing the effectiveness of fertilizing and other lawn care products
  • Increasing the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch
  • Increasing water, nutrient and oxygen movement into the soil
